Frostbite: Chapter 1

I was walking in the park near my house, where I often go to clear my mind. This side of the park was woody and deserted. The sun was setting in the distance, casting an eerie glow through the trees and across the snowy landscape.

I hummed one of my favorite winter songs as I trudged through the snow. Apparently I was the first person to come down this trail since the last snowfall. Feeling safe and alone, I began to sing the cheery tune out loud.

“Jack Frost was in the garden
I saw him there at dawn”

The wind picked up, sending a shiver down my spine. It almost seemed like the trees were listening, leaning in. The woods had gone silent. I smiled and continued, emphasizing every syllable.

“A’ dancing round the bushes
And prancing on the…. OW!”

I tripped and fell face-first in snow. My foot had caught on a branch. Sitting up, I dug it out from under the snow. It was longer than I expected. Momentarily forgetting the cold, I sat and examined my find. The frost-encrusted wood was curved on one end, much like a shepherd’s crook.  I ran my fingers along the intricate designs in the frost, marveling at this masterpiece of nature. It looked like it was straight out of a fairy tale.

The staff was oddly familiar. I stared at it, tilting my head to the right unconsciously as I tried to imagine where I’d seen it before.

“It’s beautiful isn’t it?” My eyes widened in shock and I jumped in surprise at the unfamiliar voice, a yell escaping my lips as I fell back into the cold snow. Sitting cross-legged next to me, uncomfortably close, was a strange, hooded figure.

Startled at my reaction, he jumped back as well. “You can hear me?” He squeaked. "Can... can you see me?" He stuttered in an astonished, almost panicked voice.

“Of course I can, why wouldn’t I be able to? Who are you?” I ask, puzzled at his reaction and irritated that he was able to sneak this close to me unnoticed.

He remained silent. The hood concealed everything but his nose and mouth, which wore a slight smile... or perhaps it was a smirk.

"Take off your hood" I told him curiously.

The mysterious boy hesitated for a moment, and then pulled back his hood slowly. My breath caught in my throat. His shaggy hair, as bright and silver as the moon, took me by surprise. Bright, blue eyes as large and deep as the ocean looked into mine expectantly. He’s beautiful, I decided, staring at his perfect white skin. He looked almost surreal.

I slowly examined the rest of his clothing, stunned when I noticed his bare feet resting in the snow. They weren’t even red from the cold. He wore brown pants that were cut off at the calves and laced in what looked like frost. His blue hoodie was also covered by a delicate pattern of ice.

For a moment all I could do was stare at him. "Your toes are gonna freeze off, you know” was all I managed to say.

He playfully rolled his eyes and his smirk grew wider, displaying perfectly aligned snow-white teeth.

"Who are you?" I asked again, climbing to my feet as I realized how frozen and numb my legs had become. My jeans were soaked in snow, and I shivered as the cold crept into my skin.

He sighed. "You wouldn’t believe me if I told you", he said as he stood, taking the staff from my hands. Suddenly he was uncomfortably close, peering at me with icy blue eyes that seemed to look right through me. We were only inches apart. I blushed as his eyes locked on mine. "You really want to know?"

I stepped away from him and nodded. His behavior was beginning to make me nervous. Maybe he was homeless. Or insane.  I wasn’t sure if I wanted to know. He certainly was lacking in personal space etiquette.

“I am Jack Frost, the Spirit of Winter!” he declared with a bow, twirling the staff.

I stared at him. Definitely crazy, I thought, inching further away.

But then I gasped in shock, my brain unable to comprehend what I was seeing. The strange boy was floating in mid-air in front of me. He laughed at my mouth hanging wide open. A loud, musical laughter that filled the air. I shut it quickly and shook my head several times, stunned at what I was seeing.

"Not real..." I managed to stutter.

He floated closer, smirking. "So what's your name?" he asked.

Somehow I found my voice, but it didn’t sound quite right. “___” I told him shakily.

He touched my cheek with an ice cold hand. “It’s nice to meet you, ___” he whispered. I felt warmth creep into my cheeks, and I ducked my head in an attempt to hide the fact that I was blushing again.
The teaser got a bigger response then I expected, so I decided go ahead and publish Part 1 of the story. Enjoy!

Feedback appreciated, this is my very first attempt at writing fanfiction. Jack is so adorable, I just couldn't resist!
