Frostbite: Chapter 3

---------------------------------------------------

The not-quite-human watched quietly as I tidied my room, then grabbed some dry clothes and slipped out to change. As I slid on a dry pair of jeans, I noticed my hands were still trembling. Thoughts and questions swirled through my mind so fast I felt dizzy.

Jack Frost was waiting for me in my bedroom. The temperature in my room was considerably lower compared to the rest of the house, and small snowflakes were drifting lightly in the dimly lit air. Jack was perched on top of my dresser, flipping through one of my books. Lord of the Rings meets Peter Pan , I laughed to myself as I studied him.

Apparently my brain started working again. “Hey!” I said loudly, surprising him. “How did you know where I live?” I demanded.

He hesitated. “Um… I’ve been… following you… for… a bit” he admitted slowly, avoiding my gaze.

“Creepy”, I muttered, although oddly I didn’t seem to find it so. Probably because he’s not supposed to exist. I continued to question him, sitting on the edge of my bed. “Um, why? Why haven’t I seen you before?’

He closed the book and considered me for a moment before answering. “I really don’t know” he whispered. There’s something…” his words trailed off as he observed me. From the look on his face, I had a feeling there was more that he wasn’t saying.

“Most people can’t see me, especially your age” he sighed. “A few children can, but not many adults believe in fairy tales. You're the first… girl… that’s ever seen me." The intensity in his eyes made me shift uncomfortably.

I thought about that for a minute. It had been a long, long time since I believed in fairy tales, and I don’t think I’ve ever believed in Jack Frost. Santa Clause maybe, and the Tooth Fairy, but that was about it. And that was a long time ago. I wanted to believe in magic; believe in the mysterious and paranormal, but my logical mind wouldn’t allow me.

“I don’t understand… why did I see you today?” It didn’t make any sense.

“I’ve been watching you for a long time. Hoping, wishing for you to believe in me.” He said sadly, but his smile returned as he continued, “Today you started singing, and you said my name...” He didn’t get the chance to finish, because suddenly I jumped off the bed, startling him.

“YOU!” I shouted; pointing my finger at him as I recalled the events just before his mysterious figure had appeared next to me in the snow. “You tripped me with your stick, didn’t you? On purpose!”

“I did”, he admitted sheepishly. “I was just playing, actually. I didn’t think it would work, but when you said my name, I couldn’t help myself…” he trailed off, grinning.

He continued. “You didn’t see me at first, but I think when you sang, you believed in me long enough for my staff to, ahem, trip you. Then, while you were looking at it, you heard my voice…” He paused, and then floated down from my dresser to stand in front of me. The room had grown as cold as Antarctica.

“I recognized your staff from an old book I have” I realized. “I was trying to remember who it belonged to when I heard your voice”. The way he was gazing at me with those deep, hypnotic eyes made my stomach flutter uncomfortably.

Suddenly he was so close, I could hear his heartbeat pounding irregularly. Then I realized it was my heart drumming in my chest as he leaned closer, his cold breath caressing my cheeks and sending a chill down my spine. “I’ve been wanting to try something”, he whispered so quietly I almost missed it; a glint of mischief swimming in his eyes.

“Wha-“ I began, but never finished, as his icy lips collided with my own, sending shivers throughout my body. Jack’s arms tightened around my waist as his minty fragrance filled my senses. I melted into his embrace, unwilling and unable to let it end.

But as soon as it started, the kiss was over, and Jack was gazing at me again with sparkling eyes as his cold hands still clasped me tightly. “It feels… amazing… to be believed in”, he whispered.
I didn't put any reader fill-in-the-blanks, sorry. They kind of bother me. I tried to keep it vague and focused on Jack instead. I hope you like it!
